Reaction to the article: Watch the First Google+ Connected Classrooms Field Trips

I have to say I was really excited to see this article.  Being able to show your students a place were they may not be able to physically visit is just amazing. This really makes learning a hands on experience such as going to an aquarium without every leaving the classroom.  I know we do not have an aquarium near us so this would be a wonderful experience for students in my area.  This also helps with the lack of funds many districts are facing.  The cost is really the technology but most schools do have this already in their classrooms.   I have used the Google Hangouts in my past CMU courses and found it to be a great tool for interacting with colleagues who are not in the area.  This truly is taking the "Virtual  Classroom" to the next step. Well done Google!

  1. Sarah great article! Google has some great products and Hangouts is outstanding. I do a lot of virtual field trips in my history and geography classes and the students love them. However, nothing can beat going places in person if you have the chance. The virtual stuff gets them thinking about maybe one day actually going to many of these places and what they need to do to accomplish getting there.

  6. I like this concept too. I was sharing some information with one of our literature teachers about taking a virtual tour of the Amazon Rain forest before the students read "Heart of Darkness" so they will be able to picture the area, terrain and the river itself. Wish they had this in my high school days!!

  7. Sara, I too was excited after reading your blog post and then linking to the article. My county, much like many others in our areas are faced with budget cuts, and field trips was at the top. Students aren't able to experience the real world anymore, but through Google, they now can virtually! And I also enjoyed learning about Google Hangouts in class. I have installed the app on my devices and use it for distant video chats often. I can't wait to see what Google comes up with next!

  8. Sarah, I read that article and it give a new mean to field trips. This is the kind of field trip that I would take my student on because you do not need to get a permission slip sign and with this virtual field trip the student can even ask question about what they see while on the trip.
