Chapter 8 Podcasting, Video and Screencasting, and Live Streaming

After reading chapter 8 it gave me a little more insight into how you would use Podcasting in a classroom, although I still don't think it is a great tool to use. The program that we used to create the Podcast was pretty complex I thought, and took way too much time to use for just an audio file. Especially with younger students, they lose interest so quickly if there is nothing visual to see. I think a short video file would be much for effective and interesting to use.  I like using screencasting and other video tools to help with visual directions, I think they make learning fun and interactive.  When doing the podcast I felt like I was back in the 1940’s listening to an old radio.  I am a very visual learner so just listening to someone talk causes me to lose focus quickly and miss information. Perhaps with more practice and more information I will see the positives to using Podcasting in the classroom.

  1. I know what you mean having trouble with the thought of just creating an audio podcast. I am an art teacher and I wanted to make sure that the artifact I was creating was going to be both meaningful and useful in my classroom. I ended up making a audio and visual podcast.

    Believe it or not, I have found that podcasting can be a pretty powerful tool for elementary aged children. I used to teach third grade students and we used the creation of podcasts as a way for students to work on fluency. It was pretty cool to see and hear the students so involved with the creation of their podcast. They took a lot of pride in their individual part and they found themselves recording and re-recording their audio portion of the project.

  11. I agree with you about your thoughts on the audio podcasts. I have a hard time with them as well. As an art teacher, I have found that it is pretty important for the students to be able to see what I am talking about, not just hear it. I am a visual learner myself as well, so it makes it hard for me to imagine only using audio to help to teach a part of my discipline.

  12. What program did you use? I did not like using Audacity. I would have prefered Movie Maker since I am more familar with the program.

  13. I hear you loud and clear on this one, Sarah. It's impossible for me to get through a traditional podcast- it does feel a lot like radio. For me, radio is only background noise while I'm driving- not necessarily something I cut time out of my day for. I definitely fall more in the camp of creating videos and screencasts though- they seem a much more engaging way to deliver content to students.

    I agree that Audacity was a little hard to use for first timers. I think there is a learning curve for using the software. I think that with more practice I may be able to use it effectively with my college learners. I agree with you though that having a visual for the students enhances the presentation though.
